Short stories: The first snow

by Dominic Wells

Created on: October 11, 2008

She stood at a cross-roads, metaphorically and literally. She had been standing there for sometime, contemplating her situation and her best course of action. Directly in-front of her was a vast chasm, she could cross it, into the unknown or she could turn back. Looking back the way she had come, she saw a huge mountain, marking her past and the part of the journey that was now behind her. To her left she could see the chasm went on for miles, too far for her to go around, she would lose too much time skirting round its perimeter and they would undoutedly catch her. Everything would be lost if this happened. To the right she could see the chasm stretched down hill, before meeting a river someway off in the distance. The river had once been a place of joy for her, but that had all changed, and now she feared what it might hold. Going back up the mountain was pointless, if they had followed her, she would certainly be caught. There was only one thing for it, she had to cross the chasm right here, and soon.

Her thoughts wandered away from the task at hand and back to the events that had led her here. She had been happy only a short time before, her usual self living the simply daily life that had given her purpose and fulfillment but now, that had all changed. She had been forced to take flight, fleeing her persuers with cunning and luck, desparate to avoid capture and suffer the fate that had befallen her old life, her friends and her loves ones. Simply put, she had to run for her life.

Emotion started to overtake her, and she felt the urge to cry. A few tears trickled slowly down her cheek and the warmth they left in their wake reminded her of the warmth she had left behind. She hadn't known why the attackers were there, what they wanted, all she knew was that she had to leave and now she was here, at the cross-roads, and wasting time. Emotions could wait, she had to get across this chasm.

The man had been searching for her for sometime. He was becoming desparate as fear that he would not find her began to creep into his heart. It was of the utmost importance to him that he found her. All else could wait, nothing was more important than finding her. Time was running out, Winter was rapidly approaching. Snow could fall any day now.

She was going to have to jump, and hope for the best. Looking down into the depths of the chasm she knew that a fall would be the end of her. No-one would know her fate if she fell, but then again, that was better than the fate awaiting
