Homeschool unit study: Christopher Columbus and exploration

by Joyce Wheeler

Created on: October 10, 2008

This is a great topic for a unit study for a variety of ages. Many Homeschool families contain multiple children at different learning levels. Having a unit study geared towards all levels helps to make the life of a Homeschool mom a little easier. Through the utilization of books, interactive web sites, lesson plans and printable work sheets mom's day can go a little easier. Homeschoolers love the library and frequent them a lot. This helps to not only save money, but allows for a variety of materials at their disposal. These materials include use of a computer and the internet if one is not in the home, books, audio books, music, along with video's and DVD's.

Books can be checked out for early or non-readers to be read by mom while the older children can obtain books geared towards their level. Discussions can take place between mom and the younger children while the older children can do a book report or write a report of their own. With audio books learning does not have to stop when you leave the home and can be very relaxing during rest time.

The computer and internet can be utilized by mom to locate printable worksheets, lesson plans, and ideas for crafts. Younger children will love to explore with Columbus on interactive web sites. For the older children it is a great way to help them develop important research skills which will be further utilized in college. The computer may also be used for typing up those reports we mentioned earlier.

Music can sometimes be a hard subject to teach for some Homeschool moms. This is a great opportunity to explore Spanish composers. Children can draw while they listen to the music expressing how the music makes them feel. Older children may want to make a list of words conveying their feelings which can later be used to compose a poem. This is also a great way to get creative with movement for all the children and gives them a chance to be up and around. Further study can take place on the composer for the older children along with exploring the type of music that composer composed. There are interactive web sites to visit and explore different types of music. exploration of the type of music can be fun and interesting.

Video's and DVD's are a great way to settle down with the family while receiving some education. The great thing about homeschooling is the versatility, so a movie can be viewed during normal schooling or later in the evening. If utilizing a movie during the school day pause the movie at random times when you believe a discussion is warranted. Viewing at night leaves time for the children to think about and further retain what they saw. The next the younger children can draw pictures or do craft projects geared to the exploration of Columbus. Older children can utilize their books from the library for further study and compare the two. They may want to do a report or even join the younger children for drawing and a craft project.

The wonderful thing about homeschooling is the sky is the limit it ends where you let it. There are so many areas which can be covered utilizing Columbus' explorations for instance learning some Spanish, ship building, lifestyle, travel, maps and more. Reading, watching a movie, listening to music, audio books, and the internet could all led one to discover there is so much more on this topic to be explored including other explores.
