In the human eye, the cornea and lens focus light, creating an image for the retina to process. If the focal point lies before the retina, faraway images will be blurred, but nearby images will come into focus easily. This is called myopia or nearsightedness. If the focal point lies past the retina, nearby images will be blurred, but faraway images will still come into focus. This is called hyperopia or farsightedness. Glasses, of course, are used to correct these conditions.

Glasses also correct vision problems related to near and farsightedness. Among them are presbyopia and astigmatism. Presbyopia is a consequence of age that makes nearby objects appear blurry. Astigmatism, on the other hand, results from an oddly shaped cornea. Eye classes refract the light so that it focuses on the correct part of the retina. Bifocals are made with one type of lens built into another. They were created for people who have trouble seeing objects both close up and far away.

It's always better to get prescription eyeglasses rather than generic grocery store, drugstore, or dollar store brands. It's not that non-prescription glasses damage eyesight; they aren't harmful at all. The problem is that most people will have a different prescription for each eye, but mass-produced glasses will have two lenses of the same prescription. An optometrist can provide customized prescription glasses that correct vision instead of improving it somewhat.

A widespread myth suggests that glasses weaken eyesight. They only bend light and improve vision while they're worn - that's it! Eyesight naturally worsens with age, but that's due to presbyopia, which can be corrected with reading glasses. Glasses can be made into a serious fashion statement at any age.
