We care so much about celebrities because we have no one else in this country to look up to! Celebrities in the eye of the American people are the ones that have "Made it"! There is not one person out there that does not wish to be at least wealthy. Not just money wealthy but celebrity wealthy where different companies are giving you stuff just because you are you! We want to mimic their clothing, hairstyles, cars, homes, in general their lives!
Understanding this would explain my next point. When a celebrity does something under our standard...act normal for a change! They are ridiculed in the tabloids until something else comes along. We all have to agree that we do judge celebrities harder than we would our own neighbor because celebrities in America are our royalty. All a celebrity needs to do is get caught using any type of drugs and the name is ran through the mud for weeks! If a common person had a drug problem most cases would be dealt with a discreetly and sympathetically as possible. Since there are so many people that think celebrities live the "good life" there is no margin of error. Common people feel that they are squandering the blessings that they have been given. The more often problems occur with the same celebrity usually determines how long the remain a celebrity. problems with drugs, gambling, and legal issues usually ended up being career killers. If the problems come from more personal issues such as children, marital problems, mental problems and sexual orientation are much more of the gossip sense and usually ends up being free publicity for the celebrity. It is very common for everyday people to feel better about themselves when they have heard a celebrity was faced with the same problem. I can't tell you how sick I was of hearing about Brittany Spears, and all of the bone head things she did with her children, but people just ate it up! Go figure she was the biggest winner of the MTV VMA's this year! Amy Winehouse on the other hand was not even mentioned!
I think our obsession with celebrities is healthy to a point. Keeping up to date on what our favorite celebrities are up to, and what types of activities they support help us decide if they are whom we want to invest our hard earned money in. If you find out that your favorite celebrity is against one of your biggest political issues...might change your view on that person. The people that go over the top with their obsessions need to be careful not lose themselves while they are idolizing another. We Americans will continue to care about celebrities like they are gods until we find someone, or something else to embrace instead.
