Zocor is the brand name for a drug known as Simvastatin. It is used to treat high levels of cholesterol in the blood. Cholesterol is manufactured in the liver and Zocor works by blocking the action of the enzyme that is responsible for this.
High levels of cholesterol can come about as a result of a high fat diet and too little exercise. In these cases special dietary requirements and an exercise regime are recommended. However, the condition can be due to hereditary factors, meaning that the liver simply produces too much cholesterol regardless of diet and exercise programmes. Those with this condition are at risk of developing heart disease and medication such as Zocor is needed.
Zocor is prescribed in tablet form and is usually taken at night. The dosage ranges from 10 - 40mg daily. Approximately two weeks of treatment is required for the effects to take place, but the full benefit may not come about for up to 4 - 6 weeks.
Fortunately, side effects are normally mild and tend to subside as the body becomes acquainted with the drug.
Side effects can include:
Nausea
Constipation
Flatulence
Headache
Rash
Muscle pain and/or muscle weakness
The most common side effects are those that affect the gastrointestinal system, the others are rare. However if a rash occurs it is advised to stop taking the drug immediately, but it is necessary to consult with a doctor as soon as possible, as stopping the drug may exacerbate the original condition. If muscle pain or weakness occurs it is necessary to call the doctor immediately. Zocor can have an affect on other enzymes within the liver but this does not usually cause liver damage.
It is necessary to inform the doctor if you are taking anticoagulants. Zocor can also increase the effects of these drugs so dosage adjustments may be needed. It is also wise to inform the doctor if you are taking any other medications, have long term liver problems, any muscle weakness, or problems controlling alcohol consumption. Excessive intake of alcohol when taking Zocor may increase the risk of liver damage.
Zocor is not usually prescribed during pregnancy as it can cause birth defects, so be sure to inform the doctor if there is a chance that you may be pregnant. The drug can also pass into breast milk and can have an adverse effect on the baby.
Long term treatment of Zocor may adversely affect the liver, so therefore regular liver function tests are recommended.
