For centuries eyeglasses have been used to correct eye defects and improve vision. Slight irregularities in the shape of the eye can cause major problems on focusing on an object. These irregularities can be easily corrected by using a lens which has been ground to a specific curvature and held in front of the eye in a suitable frame. Whatever the defect regular appointments with an optician should be made to ensure a proper prescription is being used and to check on any other eye conditions which may need treatment.

Where someone can see distant objects clearly but is unable to focus close up they are farsighted and they can usually be helped with reading glasses. Suitable reading glasses are usually available over the counter requiring only a check on which strength lens it suitable. Other conditions such as astigmatism were objects appear blurred or being nearsighted, also known as being shortsighted, where close up objects are clear but the person cannot see distant objects require prescription glasses. It is also possible to correct for two eye conditions in one set of glasses; with the lower part of the lens suitable for reading and the upper part designed for distance viewing; bifocal or varifocal glasses remove the necessity of changing pairs between activities.

At one time the shape and size of frames used to hold the lenses of prescription eyeglasses was dictated by the ability of the lens maker. Now lenses can be made in many different shapes and this has allowed many big name fashion houses to produce a range of designer eye glasses. With eye glasses now a fashion accessory the old adage "men don't make passes at girls wearing glasses" is certainly no longer true if it ever was. Looking at the world through rose colored glasses no longer means not seeing bad things it just means you like the color. Lenses can also be customized with different tints and colors so prescription sun glasses can be made. Light reactive lenses adjust to the ambient light to darken in bright sunlight or be clear in the shade. Along with shatterproof lenses suitable for taking part in sporting activities there are glasses available for every occasion.
