Look Into Their Eyes
look into their eyes
the greatest and most terrible void
for it was once filled
with strife
love and joy
life
but now barren
you could never see the bottom
through the blackness
for you have never felt the night
but it is there
where they now reside
lost
to what we all have made

for whom?
not themselves
they are no longer there
it is for us
but gratitude
is no substiture for life
long after their bodies fell
long after the gunfire ceased
now that we have
what they were fighting for
their stare remains
upon the pages of our history books
now look into their eyes
