As we age we lose our abilities. We hope our mind is the last thing to go. Just like our body our brain needs daily exercise. Give it a workout and keep it healthy. For simple ways to keep your mind sharp and alert see my list for great mind activities.
1. Sleep- Getting enough sleep is definitely important. It's hard to think quickly when you're tired. Simple things can confuse you and take excess time. To be alert you need to feel rested!
2. Proper nutrition- It's difficult to focus when you body is hungry. All you can think of is food. Eat healthy and take your vitamin pills. It really is food for thought!
3. Exercise- Exercise is a great way to keep your mind active. It keeps you feeling refreshed and alert. Sometimes you feel tired and lacking in energy. Team sports or a workout can help!
4. Keep busy- Exercising your brain means keeping it active. Don't spend too much time just relaxing. Take a class, get a job or volunteer for a cause. Don't let your brain go dormant!
5. Reading and Writing- Reading is a great activity for your mind. There are so many options available. Read the newspaper, a novel or a magazine. Try writing an article online!
6. Medical Checkups- Make sure to get your physical each year. It helps keep your whole body healthy. If you have aches and pains or chemical imbalances you may not be thinking clearly. Get your eyes and your ears checked on a regular basis. Proper glasses or a hearing aid may help!
7. Hazards- There are many things you can do that have a negative impact. Alcohol and drugs kill brain cells. Be careful not to overuse any medications. Kick that tobacco habit!
8. Stress- Managing your stress will keep you mind healthy. Don't constantly run it on overdrive. Learn relaxing breathing and take your vacations. Try booking a monthly massage!
9. Responsibilities- Having a responsibility to yourself or others can help to keep your mind sharp. Taking care of your kids, partner, spouse or a pet gives you a reason to stay alert. It makes you focus on the time and the tasks you must do. Is it time to feed your cat dinner?
10. Socialize- Visit friends or family or join a club. Socialize with other people. Debate current issues or discuss old memories. Join a bowling league or literary club!
There are so many great things to see and do in this world. A person should never stop learning. Visit new places and make new friends. Learn at home with a book or TV. Keep your mind active; you only have one. It's your own responsibility to use it!
