Tips for candle safety and care

Candles have been used as a source of lighting for thousands of years. Over time, their usage has evolved beyond lighting, and now serves the purpose of decoration and diffusing fragrances. According to The National Candle Association, candles can be found in seven out of 10 households in the United States. They have, indeed, become a household staple.

In light of their popularity, it's more important than ever to burn candles safely. After all, where there's a flame, there's a potential fire. The National Candle Association reports that approximately four percent of residential fires that occur in the United States are caused by candle fires. These fires could have possibly been prevented by following a few simple candle safety guidelines. The following is a list of valuable information regarding candle safety:

-When burning candles, make sure the flame is in an open space, and cannot potentially reach anything that could catch on fire.
-Burn candles in well-ventilated spaces, and avoid burning candles in drafty areas.
-Keep a close eye on burning candles. Do not leave candles unattended, and keep them away from children and pets.
-Avoid splattering hot wax by using a wax dipper (which is used to dip the wick into the melted wax) to extinguish the flame, rather than blowing out the flame or using water.
-Prior to each use, trim the wick to 1/4 of an inch above the surface of the candle. Long wicks can cause the flame to flare and, if the candle is in a glass holder, can cause the glass to shatter.
-When using candles in a jar or candle holder, discontinue burning when 1/2 of an inch of wax remains in the bottom of the container. Burning candles past this point can create excessive heat, causing the glass to shatter.
-Use a heat-resistant candle holder when burning candles.
-Read the manufacturer's label (which should appear on the bottom of each candle), and adhere to all warnings.
-Never leave a candle burning while sleeping.

In addition to using candles safely, proper care of candles is important as well. Caring for candles properly can extend the burn time of candles. Candles should be stored in a temperature-controlled environment of 70-80 degrees. If candles get too hot, they will melt. If they get too cold, the wax can shrink. Keep candles out of the direct sunlight or fluorescent lighting, as such lighting can discolor the candles. To experience an even burn, use double-wicked candles.

Following these tips will help ensure a delightful and safe candle-burning experience.
