Simple ways to save money during the holidays

The holidays are always a time of spending money and going into debt. It seems that by the next year, when the holidays finally come around again, we are just getting out of debt from the previous year. There are so many ways that one can save money and cut back on spending to avoid going into debt every year, and here are just a few strategies.

First off, you do not need to buy fifty gifts for just one person. Many people in a family like to compete around the holiday times to see who can get so and so the best gift or the most generous. In most families, however, it is more about the thought that counts instead of that chenille sweater! Get something small and practical for each person that you are shopping for. With children, a small present to open is sufficient and maybe a savings bond, so that they have their futures thought of.

Next, making gifts is just as fun, especially if you have children. The winter is so cold and the kids are cooped up in the house. Instead of sitting them in front of the television, why don't you have an arts and crafts day and make gifts for everyone on the list. They will appreciate them alot more, especially since it is coming from young ones. If you do not have children, teach yourself how to knit or crochet, and make scarves or sweaters for your family. It is truly a gift that comes from the heart!

If all else fails and you feel the need to go shopping, do it from home. Go on line and price shop for the best values around. If you know a bunch of people would like the same thing, buy it in bulk and save yourself money. That does not mean that you can not also personalize gifts and buy them each something individual, but just make sure that you do not go overboard.

The holidays is such a hard time to try and conserve and save money. It is hard for everyone to do, what with all the great sales and cute things to buy. You just have to be reasonable and set a budget and stick to it and then you will not go into debt. It is a hard thing to do, but will all be worth it when you have that extra money to go and take a cruise to the Bahamas in the Spring. Just remember that presents from the heart and more worth it than present from the store!
