Service warning: Brakes are making noise

I write from experience. Many times I have had a customer come in and
complain about a noise. "I don't know what's wrong with my car; I hear a
funny noise when I apply my brakes." And with some follow up questions,
I discover that its been happening for a while.

The car goes on the rack and the wheels come off and there it is, damage.
Usually the damage is quite extensive. Not only are the brake pads worn
down to the metal, the bare metal of the pads have been grinding against
the rotors. Sometimes the calipers can be salvaged.

The car owner is lucky if the rotors can be turned, the calipers salvaged,
and then install new pads. Most of the time the car needs new rotors and
calipers in addition to new pads. It can become very expensive.

Remember what I tell you. If and when you hear noises coming from any area
of your car, take it seriously. Visit your favorite automotive repair shop.
Let them inspect the car from bumper to bumper, looking for the funny noise
that you describe.

If you take your car in immediately when you hear a noise while applying your
brakes, you will be facing a much lower repair bill. Caught in time, all that
may be needed are new pads.

You must put your fears aside and not worry about going to an auto repair shop.
Even if you know nothing about the mechanics of your car, simply throw caution
to the wind and have it checked out.
