I stand by the traditional saying of, "If I do not vote, I cannot complain!" I have never understood why someone in the land of the free would not take the time to vote. Voting is a right in our country, which we should all be truly thankful for. Did you know that in some countries people risk their lives to vote? Voting is something that too many of us take for granted and need to exercise this freedome when the opportunity arises.
It wasn't until 1971 that the 26th Amendment came into being and states that men and women at the age of 18, as citizens are eligible to participate in an election. Our schools have done a pretty good job in regards to letting young people know when and how they should register to vote. Ultimately, it is us to us as United States citizens to register and know where and when to vote. Not being "in town" the day of an election is not acceptable. For most elections citizens are able to vote through an absentee ballot, therefore; if you are serving in the military, living overseas, or simply out of town the day of an election you can vote ahead of time. But again, it is all up to you, the citizen, to get out and vote.
Voting not only provides us citizens with a say in our government, but a feeling of pride. We are able to elect people that decide to take the challenge of running for office by participating in elections throughout the year. Local jurisdictions, as well as state jurisdictions offer voting opportunities for all Americans. United States Citizens need to remember that we live in a country that is abundant with an opportunity to speak our voice through voting at a polling site. One vote can make a difference and by not voting your vote could be the reason an issue did not go in your favor.
Ultimately, it is up to you, the United States Citizen, to go out and cast your ballot when the opportunity arises. Nobody can do it for you. Remember, you do not have the right to complain if you choose not to participate in an election. Unfortunately, there are times when we, as Americans, decide that no candidate or issue is important enough to vote for. This is when we need to step up to the plate and exercise our right to vote. In order for the voting process to work as it should, we need to vote! Take the time to get out and vote, exercise a freedom that we can enjoy. If you choose not to participate in the voting process, please, do not complain the next time you drive down a road and the bumps are tossing you around, as your vote may have made the difference!
