Breakfast on the go

by Callie Van Zant

Created on: October 07, 2008

The first thing we need to do in order to get over our breakfast phobia is to re-define breakfast. Our culture has a preconceived notion of what foods breakfast consists of and if we don't have those foods available, we won't eat.

Breakfast can be anything, ask any college student worth his salt who has eaten cold pizza for breakfast and they'll tell you. Leftovers from dinner make a great breakfast. They are already cooked, require only that you place them on a plate the night before and heat them in the microwave this morning. Viola! Breakfast!

Did you have chicken for dinner? Chicken salad wraps for breakfast prepared last night. Beef for dinner last night, beef pita for breakfast. Pork chops for dinner, pork chop sandwich for breakfast this morning. It's easy, all the work is done the night before, it's fast because all it takes is warming it up while you do something else, you can hold in one hand to eat it, and Bob's your uncle!

If you just can't bring yourself to eat dinner for breakfast, how about easy breakfast for one hand? Take a couple of hours out of one day on the weekend to prepare your breakfast for the entire week. Or for several weeks! Make several different things and freeze them all, then pop them in the microwave for eating while you're on the way to work. Scrambled egg wraps with peppers and veggies of your choice, pitas with veggies and chicken, turkey, etc; croissants with Canadian bacon and scrambled egg substitute are just a few ideas. In just a couple of hours you could fill your freezer with enough breakfast on the go to get your brain cells doing the macarena in the mornings.

If you simply must have someone else make your breakfast for you, find a small resturaunt with a drive thru. Go in and talk to the manager. Tell them that you will pay in advance for the month, give them your order for the month along with the time you will be there, and see if they will have your order ready for you when you arrive. It never hurts to ask and you will often be surprised at what you can get simply by asking for it. That kind of personal customer service is often a badge of honor among food service managers.

There are many breakfast drinks available in supermarkets as well as personal drink bottles. Fill one with the fluid of your choosing the night before and leave it in the refrigerator. Put the powder in the fluid and shake it up in the morning and drink it on your way to work. These drinks are purported to have all the nutritional value of a full meal. You can also find them for any kind of diet you might currently be on.

With a small amount of planning and a little bit of imagination, breakfast on the go can be a satisfying and healthy meal.
