The best tools for the job; a hammock and a beverage! That won't do if something needs to be done. Off to the hardware store with a list.
It's not that easy. All jobs require specific tools. Starting from scratch? Need some tools tips? Automotive, gardening, and woodworking tools are not the same.
The first question to answer, in this tool quest; "How much work will be done?" For example: overhauling an engine and transmission, rotary tilling the back 40, building a wood gazebo? Just the basics in case an item needs repair, planting or fixing?
After this decision is made, research before purchasing. Good tools make all the difference. With so many choices; information is a must. Check with an expert in the field, or a knowledgeable friend for advice on what and where to buy.
Here's a few lists; hand tools and selected brand names:
Automotive tools
Craftsman, Crescent, Gear Wrench
• The Sets;
• Wrench
• Screwdriver
• Socket
• Other
• Flashlight
• Oil change pan

Woodworking tools

Basic hand tools are all that's needed for small jobs. Total cost for everything above: Two to three hundred dollars. If the desired outcome is a bit more extensive, vroom-vrooom, then the list gets kicked up a notch.
One word: Power tools, oops that's two words. Thousands of dollars can be spent on air powered or compression tools. This side of the tool shed is not for the amateur.

Dewalt, Milwaukee, Ingersoll Rand, Big Red Jacks, Hi-Lift

• Garage heater

Tools for the trade can be extravagant or minimal, depending on interest or job. Many brand names interchange. There are other generic needs like clothing, clean-up, storage or some of the following:
• Automotive:
Basic: Handled tool box with drawers
Power: Garage, tool chest, shelving units, containers, hanging board, extension cords, clamps, oil and other auto fluids, intercom to keep in contact when the 15 minute job turns into hours.
• Garden:
Basic: Area to hang tools
Power: Garage or shed, hose reel, shelving, buckets, extension cords, trash containers, refuse bags, stool with wheels
• Woodwork:
Basic: Handled tool box
Power: Workshop, tool belt, various sizes of nails, screws, fasteners, shelves, large work bench, plane, putty knife, awl, pliers, tape, glues, paint, brushes, utility knife, ladder
Needed for all power jobs; safety glasses, good lighting, and a power source. If turning a trade, tools are deductible and can be depreciated; come tax time. Tool ownership while costly, is fun and rewarding.
Purchasing is an investment so choose wisely. Decide first the seriousness of current job and future jobs. Ask for advice, get a Northern Tool and Equipment catalog and do the homework before buying.
