Reflections: Perspective

by Kathy Vandermark

Created on: October 05, 2008

Perspective is like the looking glass to our lives. It is the viewpoint in which we see things, and it is our eyes to view the world. Too many of us take off on our daily journey without taking our looking glass, and we may as well be walking around blind.

Getting a better perspective of our lives is a way of soul searching. It can help answer those questions that nag at us, such as "Who am I?" and "What is my purpose?" The soul search is a journey, and one very well worth taking.

The destination is Imagination Land. I took the trip and it was true perspective. I climbed up to the highest peak on lookout mountain. I could not believe the view! It was like looking at half of the world at one time. I saw vast, very detailed, molded land, which finally dropped into the horizon. I took the scene in for a minute and then pulled out my looking glass for a better look.

There, as if etched out, was the path to my life. It ran through much rugged land. At many times, there were forks. I wondered as I looked at the forks, what had possessed me to take some of the roads I had chosen. I had chosen the dark, rocky road over the meadowland. I saw the points of the journey where I had my children. I saw points where times were good and I should have stopped and enjoyed the moment. Instead, I continued on like I was on a rat race. Each time I took the wrong path, I noticed there had always been narrow roads running off of them, that would lead me back to the right path. A few times I managed to get on those narrow roads, but I usually just continued down that rugged trail. After going way out of my way, I did always eventually come back to the right path.

I noticed many other paths, intertwined with my own. These were the paths of the people who had shared in my journey for a time, then went down their own chosen road. Some of the paths never run far from my own. Looking close, I see these are the paths of my family.

I looked at one point that was so bright, it about blinded me. It was the point in which I took Jesus into my life. From that point on, my path seemed to have some meaning. I began traveling as though I had a true destination. I didn't stray as often. And when I had to cross treacherous waters or jagged rock fields, I seemed to have the strength to do so. Oh, if only I could have grabbed that light earlier on the journey. But the path is etched, and all I can do is continue on, try to make wiser choices throughout the remainder of my journey. The light of Jesus will
