Parents trying to find the best caregiver for their child face an overwhelming task. Children benefit in many ways from in-home care, with more sanitary toy and play areas and individualized attention and supervision. But how do you choose someone who will nurture your child with the same diligence and care that you would?
There are many options available to you. Carefully consider your own lifestyle and family needs. If your children are involved in several extra-curricular activities you may prefer a combination nanny housekeeper to keep the home fires burning while you attend soccer games and ballet recitals. Have an extra bed and bathroom? You may benefit from the cost effectiveness and efficiency of a live-in nanny. American nannies and nannies from different regions and nations will each have something special to offer your child.
Once you've determined your child care needs, it's time to start hunting. On-line agencies can provide free resources as well as paid access to on-line nanny databases. Also you can ask for referrals from other parents, place a classified ad, make a call to a local employment agency, or ask around in the Early Childhood Education department of a local college.
When interviewing potential nannies make sure to research both experience and qualifications. Get references from previous childcare positions and character references from a teacher or clergy. Require current Red Cross certifications in First Aid, and Infant and Child CPR. Obtain a criminal background check. If you are comfortable with the potential nanny, set up a supervised play date to observe his or her individual "chemistry" with your child. Trust your intuition. If you don't feel comfortable leaving your child with this person on a daily basis, then find someone else!
A good nanny will enjoy children, will not be afraid to set and enforce reasonable boundaries as necessary, and will be able to structure your child's day in a fun and stimulating way. Your child will benefit with the care and supervision of a qualified and loving adult, and you will feel secure in the knowledge that your child is safe, happy, and well cared for. There are many wonderful nannies out there, and with careful searching you will find the right fit for your family.
