More traffic is the goal of most bloggers. No matter if it is a social blog or a monetized blog designed to provide income, people want their work to be seen. There are several ways to go about building traffic and they can best be summed up in three easy to follow guidelines.
* Content
Content is king in building blog traffic. You must make your blog worth reading or no one will ever come back even if you manage to get them there once. Write stimulating entries that will inform, entertain or interest your readers.
There is a differing opinion on how often and what size of entry you should make. The decision is best left up to the individual blogger to see what works for him. Writing two or three large entries a week works for some while others write several short entries a day.
Whichever you choose be sure to give your targeted reader some value in your entries to bring them back. If you give them value they will share with their friends and you will grow by word of mouth. This leads to the second point.
* Circulation
If content is king, circulation is most certainly the queen. Many people will mix up the two and put out a poor blog into mass circulation. Many will see it as spam and never go back and the blog will suffer from lack of readership.
Get links to you blog everywhere you can, but don't be a spammer. Try forums that cater to the same topic as your blog. Put a link in your signature line and then write intelligent helpful entries on that forum. Don't post a lot of "look what I wrote" posts, most likely that will get you banned or seen as a spammer.
Try joining a blog carnival. These are a periodic listings of blog posts from different bloggers all in one place. If you can find a subject that you have written about submit your entry and they will put it in the next listing.
Comment on others blogs. This is a great way to get your name in circulation. Make intelligent comments on related blogs. Look for successful and popular blogs that feature topics similar to yours. I have found it helps to have an interesting picture that shows along side your comment.
* Consistency
If content is king and circulation is queen consistency is the treasury. You need to write your content consistently be it once a week or ten times a day. You can't change back and forth or your readers will get frustrated.
Once you have gotten a following there is an expectancy for you to put so much material out in a certain amount of time. Some variance will obviously happen but don't be wildly inconsistent. You may get away with it more on a social blog but if you are monetized to generate income you will turn off some readers and they will get frustrated when new content is not forthcoming as they expect.
Remember to give your readers value in your content, get your links out into circulation and be constant in your writing and you should have no problem building traffic on your blog.
