Musician reviews: Leerone

lyrics are tantalizing as she fumes in "Junk/Peace Of Mind" with a rebellious spirit, "I can't watch TV / It's far too depressing for me / Too many advertisements telling me, I'm not good enough / Infecting me with greed / Invitations to consume." The harmonic sensibilities are soft while exhibiting a tinge of despondency insisting on going where the chordal forms want to, instead of where they are expected to through the melody.

Leerone's spirited individuality is also conveyed in her uniquely designed website at www.leerone.com and her music videos, of which she has only one and that is for "Care For Some Whiskey." The music video is a modern interpretation of the Lewis Carroll tale "Alice In Wonderland." The video opens with a tea party, but instead of tea being served to the animal/muppets seated at the dining table, Leerone pours whiskey into their cups. The video moves through a series of events with Leerone portraying in Alice in the film as she falls down a shaft and into a nether world trying to find her way through strange forests and weaving trails. The animation and artistic design of the video is immensely entertaining and poignant to the song with verses that put a stake in the ground and refuse to waver from its stance, "Yes, I know this is a vicious cycle / I don't know that we'll ever learn / Burn, burn, burn only to return as if somehow we have forgotten / I don't want my memory to degrade or even fade / Rather, I bare the pain than to find my mind cannot retain." The bridge part poses, "Acting out the life you want to live / How will you dream if you have not seen beyond the scope of your scripted routine."

The songs string into a story that changes its shape as they relate to events and encounters which enter people's daily lives. Leerone conveys these series of events into musical form using heavy and light shades in the piano keys that are displayed in "Rosie Lee," and carnival-like accordion tones coursing through "Empty Houses." The wistful string arrangement in "Share" moves with the delicacy of a sunrise coming up over the horizon, and the jubilant beating of the glockenspiel chimes moving through "Knocking" have a lively sprint as Leerone's vocals extract well-placed histrionics which empower the song's emotive sensations. The melodic caps rolling through songs like "Happy + Homemade" and "Life Could Be" are elegantly adorned in delicate nuances and cascading crinkles that ruffle gently and coat Leerone's vocals in warm heat.

Leerone is an artist who might be new to many folks, but little by little the climb to acquiring public attention is becoming easier for her. Since the release of "Imaginary Biographies," Leerone's engine has experienced no cutbacks in keeping the steam running, which is hard to achieve amidst this economic recession, but it is a testament that good artists do prevail even through troubling times.
