Polished and professional is traditionally the look of workplace attire. Though your job position may demand specific clothing requirements, there are ways in which you can both dress the part and add your own flare, when appropriate. There are general rules for professional dress, but again a touch of who you are can be expressed subtly and yet not go unnoticed.
Suits for men and women are classic, professional attire and are necessary pieces for the corporate wardrobe. Suit styles can out date rather quickly, depending if the style is trendy or classic. The more classic the cut, the longer the wear time. If you are buying a suit that is not the highest of quality, buy a dark color as darker colors tend to add the look of quality.
The suit, itself, is basic apparel. Change it up to express your own personality. It may be a new shirt color, tie or scarf, and/or jewelry that you can add to dress it up. Have a selection, so you can change your look for any situation, should you want to stand out in a crowd or blend in to prove your ability to meet the company standards. Your shirt or blouse adds color to a black, navy, or another neutral colored suit.
Jewelry needs to be worn with discretion, but not too much! Ladies, limit yourself to a couple pieces. It has been said that if you can't decide which or how much to wear, e.g. a necklace, bracelet, earrings; put it all on and then take one piece off. Also, classic pieces like pearls, small stones, etc. says stylish but serious. Regarding body jewelry, again, understated is your best policy here.
A dressy sweater over a shirt, blouse or sleaveless sweater are also within the boundaries of professional wear, maybe depending on the day's agenda.
Clean and pressed is always in and says so much about any workplace attire, whether it is an electrician's work pants or jeans in a warehouse. Clothes that fit properly are not only more comfortable to wear, but look neat and smart.
Let's talk a bit about shoes. Probably, the first quality you will want in on-the-job shoes is comfort. Other than that, again, not too trendy, but dressy and polished.
If your resume speaks of your abilities on the job, the way you dress speaks of who you are. Your attitude and posture can say as much or more about you than your clothing. A put together look can be a combination of classy and updated with a touch of personality. Even if you are one of the most conservative of dressers, you can make dressing for work a pleasant experience each day. Dressing well for your job position adds comfort and confidence that will boost your day.
