Most tourist travel to Alaska
by air, and usually arrive in Anchorage. If you do not want to get off the beaten path there is still a lot to do in Anchorage.
If nightlife and excitement is what you crave, Chilkoot Charlies, or Koots as the locals call it, is your place. Koots has that old Alaska charm you are looking for with sawdust-covered floors. They host a huge array of talent from local to famous bands. They also host comedians and variety shows.
Anchorage
is scattered with a lot of happening nightlife spots. Just to name a few are Platinum Jaxxs, Rumrunners, and The Peanut Farm.
If culture is what you are after, you must visit the Native
Heritage Center. This is a museum were you can learn about Alaska's indigenous people. They offer demonstrations of traditional native dancing and games.
Another great place to learn about Alaska
and its rich history is the Anchorage
Museum. They offer fun for all ages. They have a huge amount of history on the state of Alaska
thru art and exhibits. They also have hands on learning of science.
If you are in search of pure fun the best place to go is H2Oasis. This is Alaskas only indoor water park.
At H2Oasis they have a a variety of water activites to include the Master Blaster. The master blaster is a water slide that wraps all the way around the inside of this remodeled airplane hanger. They also have food and a full arcade so you can take a break from playing in the water.
For wildlife, the Alaska Zoo is the best place to see Alaskan and non-Alaskan animals. They feature a beautiful polar bear exhibit, a moose, and camel. The zoo operates year round but several of its creatures do hibernate for the winter.
If you head south out of Anchorage you will come to Girdwood. This is the home of Alyeska Ski Resort.
At Alyeska you can enjoy world class skiing or snowboarding. For indoor luxury they offer an indoor pool and full workout facilities.
Further south you will come to Kenai, Homer, or Seward. All of these towns offer a completely unique Alaskan experience.
They have fishing, hunting, and shopping.
If north is were your headed, you will come to Fairbanks. Fairbanks is the second largest city in Alaska.
One of the best things in Fairbanks is the Midnight Sun Gold Tournament. The Midnight Sun Golf Tournament is held on the summer solstice. You can play 18 holes of golf under the midnight sun.
If is Alaska
adventure travel you seek, the Iditarod is just for you. This happens the first Saturday in March. The Iditarod is 1049 miles of extreme wilderness. This is the worlds longest sled dog race. For those in seek of a true Iditarod experience you can ride with a musher.
Many of these funds raised by the ride along program go to charity.
Nestled around the largest mountain in North America is the Denali National Park. This is six million acres of picturesque beauty. If you want to see wildlife this is were you will find it. Moose, bears, sheep, you will find them all here.
Denali
National Park offers bus tours through the park that end at the old mining community of Kantishna. Private vehicles are not allowed beyond the mile 15 of the Denali
Park road.
Whether it is hiking thru the grand Denali
National Park or strolling along historic 4th Avenue
in Anchorage, Alaska has a little of something for everyone. Come to Alaska and enjoy the ride.
