Tootie
Her early life was sad
Someone dumped her from a car.
She and two other mutts
Had traveled, together, far.
Six-month's old, I brought her home -
She was curly-haired and black.
There was only one problem facing us,
I was told to take her back!
But I had already fallen
In love with her that day;
So, I made the decision -
That she "was" going to stay.
We had to say goodbye, today,
To this friend we'd come to know.
She was getting on in years -
It was hard to let her go.
Fifteen years we cared for her;
She'd always been there for us.
I brought her home from a shelter;
And, in us, she'd placed her trust.
She was with me, many years ago,
On a day I felt depressed;
I was sobbing on the bed,
When she jumped onto my chest.
She knew that my two kids
Had gone back to their dad's;
There was no one else at home
She was the only friend I had.
She licked my face as if to say
That it would be okay.
I often wondered how she knew
My feelings on that day.
But the day came, when she had to go
To strike off on her own;
Now she's in Canine Heaven, resting,
In her eternal home.
