not saying in any manner that the Bible does not offer ANY spiritual material and is ONLY political in nature, but if you step away from reading it purely as a spiritual treatise and start comparing it to other available material from that time, you find that there are many similarities between the subject matter of the Bible and other POLITICAL material being circulated amongst different groups.
Another layer to consider in this process is that a "cleansing", a "renewal", and a "New Age" have been prophesied by far many more groups and for a far longer period of time than Christians and Christianity's existence. Evidence of this belief goes back thousands of years before Christ, let alone before Christianity (Christ was not a Christian. The church was formed by Paul after the death of Jesus, and Jesus never mentioned any desire to have a religion or any other sort of organization built upon his offering of wisdom and love). Again, this concept of the "end of one world" and the formation of a "new world" is found in ancient Sumerian writings, Egyptian writings that predate the period of Jesus, Central and South America had their beliefs based on this concept (hence, the Mayan Calendar), the Asian peoples have various forms of this belief, even Australian Aborigines have a variation on this belief. You can even find this belief within the belief systems of far flung natives on widely separated islands who have no contact with each other or any mainland, in the sheltered tribes in the remotest parts of Africa, in the oldest traditions of the Nordic peoples and within those of the ancient inhabitants of the British Isles. This concept is hardly a Christian original. It actually appears to be absolutely universal and incredibly ancient.
With all that said, and with a new era dawning in which many people are being exposed to more and more information and are beginning to see similarities between many of the world's religions and in the stories of almost all of the Earth's societies, there is yet another way to view this scenario in the Bible and to have it make sense in all aspects of all perceptions of all peoples across the globe. With that concept in mind, and all the previous information as a foundation, perhaps (and, likely, in this writer's opinion) the original concept as presented by the Bible's long-ago authors of the "Battle of Armageddon" is not a physical event at all. Perhaps it is yet another allegory to explain a larger idea which is not maybe so easily
