HAIL TO THE KING, BABY!
Avid PC Gamers will remember the edgy-ness of this classic title. Do you remember the password to unlock "Adult" mode and the classic one-liners you could unlock? As far as early first person shooters go, this one is prolific. Have you been waiting years for Duke Nukem Forever and are thinking of turning to Xbox 360 live for your Duke fix? Here are a few things to keep in mind.
First off, this is not the same Duke Nukem 3d that was available for the N64, which was an updated version of the original PC game. This is a port of the original PC game so it lacks some of the smoother game play featured on the Nintendo 64. For purists, this may not be a problem at all. It's the same old Duke Nukem, alien-blasting action we have come to love. But is it worth another purchase, or should you save your hard-earned Microsoft Points?
I believe that if you have never played this game before, it's worth the purchase. Nostalgia aside, it's not the greatest first person shooter but it's certainly not the worst and the humor and sheer attitude of this game alone make it worth the purchase. If you, like myself, have put countless hours into the PC version of this game you may want to think about if its really worthwhile to play again. If you still have that atomic designed disc sitting around in a spool somewhere, it may be time to dust it off and save your points for something more original that's only available on the Xbox live arcade. If you just can't get enough Duke, then I would highly recommend this and you will know exactly what to expect. For what it is, it does not disappoint.. It is Duke Nukem 3d exactly how you remembered it. I'll admit I enjoyed it more with a Wireless Controller than with a keyboard and mouse, which is rare as I often prefer shooters on the PC. This game is going on thirteen years old, and it has held the test of time quite decently.
Overall, I have to say that this is exactly what you would expect and if you have never gotten to experiance the Duke before, here is a great chance. If your on the fence about it, it may be worth just getting the demo first and deciding if it's really worth your while. Chances are you already know what to expect from this game, and it's up to you to decide if another romp through the strip club is worth your points or not. But I have to go, it's time to write articles and chew bubblegum.. and I'm all outta gum.
