Visions and dreams

by Ed Ostrom

Created on: October 02, 2008

One's vision of his life has much to do with what one will accomplish in life. Proverbs 29:18 declares "Where there is no vision the people perish." If we do not have a vision for our lives we will find ourselves drifting through life and we will be like tumbleweed blowing in the desert wind. We will become sifting sand in the endless sea of discouragement and unfulfilled dreams. He who does not have a vision for his life drifts through life aimlessly and lives on fringe of defeat and despair.

There is an old story told that one day some how an egg fell out of an eagle's nest. The egg somehow survived the fall, and intact rolled down the cliff side and landed on the ground far below the nest that it had been in. Shortly after the egg took its fateful flight from its nest it was rescued by a pair of prairie chickens. They adopted the egg. They carried it to their nest and put it with their own eggs. They nurtured it along with the other eggs, sitting on it and keeping it warm. Ultimately the egg hatched and the little eaglet opened its eyes and was greeted by the world around it. It was a prairie chicken world. Like his nest mates the little guy learned how to scratch the ground looking for grubs and worms and seeds in order to feet himself. One day his eyes were irresistibly drawn to the sky high above where he witnessed the graceful flight of two bald eagles soaring in the air currents. Something deep with him resonated with their soaring. He flapped his wings and longed to soar. When the other prairie chickens watched him they belittled him and asked him what he was doing. Prairie chickens do not fly. They are meant to stay on terra firma and scratch in the dirt. They are not to soar. The young eagle grew up believing he was a prairie chicken and therefore he did not soar as he was meant to. Truly the eagle who thought he was a prairie chicken was living life from the wrong perspective.

How many people today live their life from the wrong perspective? How many people are like the eagle who thought he was a prairie chicken? How many people today have no vision for their lives, and find themselves frustrated, defeated and depressed. ? Their lives are meaningless and empty. Instead of soaring they grovel and scratch in the dirt and mire of life.

How can we soar like eagles instead of scratching like prairie chickens? Isaiah 40:31 says "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not be
