Things to do in winter in Telluride, Colorado

Telluride, Colorado is synonymous with incredible downhill skiing. If downhill skiing or snowboarding is not your passion, don't scratch Telluride off your winter destination list. Winter in Telluride offers lots of things to do off the downhill slopes. Here are a few suggestions.

1. Ice Skating: Choose from a quiet pond in Mountain Village that is lit for night skating or the refrigerated and partially enclosed Harley Ice Rink in Telluride. From Hockey player to hockey mom, there's skating for everyone to enjoy.

2. Ice Climbing: The San Juan Mountains are home to some of the best ice climbing in the world. Local waterfalls freeze in the winter and become playgrounds for ice enthusiasts. Nearby Ouray Ice Park is a great place to learn the sport or practice your skills.

3. Dog Sledding: You don't have to go to Alaska to enjoy this thrill. From harnessing the dogs to steering the sled, to sitting back and enjoying the scenery, this is an exhilarating way to see the back country.

4. Snowmobiling: Some places can only be reached by snowmobile in winter. From a Ghost Town to a Hot Springs, you can experience amazing views and feed your need for speed on a snowmobile tour.

5. Sleigh Ride: Few things are more romantic than snuggling under a blanket on a horse drawn sleigh. A sleigh ride can also be a fun group event for up to 12 people. Choose a simple ride or follow it with dinner by a roaring fire.

6. Tubing: Telluride is one of the few resorts that has an area reserved just for tubing. Adults and children can experience Thrill Hill as you ride down a snow covered hill on an innertube.

7. Snowshoeing/Nordic Skiing: On downhill slopes you're limited to the same scenery. But strap on a pair of snowshoes or cross-country skis and you can head out on the many trails and see amazing sites that those on ski lifts will miss. Snowshoes are shorter and easier to use nowadays so consider trying this fun sport.

8. Spas: Weather you need your tired muscles massaged after a day playing outdoors or just want to pamper yourself, there are plenty of spas that offer everything from facials to massages to complete rejuvenation packages. There is even a natural hot springs nearby.

9. Shopping: Telluride and Mountain Village have great shopping. You will find something for everyone. One-of-a-kind boutiques, art galleries, outdoor equipment shops, southwestern to contemporary jewelry, and specialty stores for pet lovers and knitters are just some of the unique shops to be found.

10. Restaurants/Nightlife: There is no shortage of things to do in Telluride after the sun goes down. Pick from Asian, French, Latin, Mexican cuisine and more, from casual to fine dining. For nightlife, choose from the local "dive" bar to upscale nightclubs, or live music, there is something for every taste.

All day and into the night, Telluride is a winter playground with fun for everyone of any age.
