Whether you're a fashion diva or someone who could care less about how they dress, one thing is for certian; you have probably worn a t-shirt at some point in your life. While it is hard to pin-point the exact origin of this classic garment, some sources refer to t-shirts as far back as ancient Egypt. It is easy to see why this garment has stood the test of time; it's light-weight, comfortable, comes in a variety of styles and colors, and goes with just about everything. T-shirts can be paired with jeans, heels, skirts, pajama pants, and anything else you could think of. They can advertise your favorite band, political party, piece of art, or just make you laugh. When it comes down to it, they seem like the ultimate clothing item, perfect for any occasion. This, however, is not the case. While t-shirts are worn by everyone from infants to the elderly, bi-passing gender lines and international borders, there are some instances when wearing a t-shirt just isn't appropriate.
Weddings:
A wedding is supposed to be the happiest day of someone's life. There will be plenty of pictures taken of family and friends, dressed their best, dancing and having fun. Since you're not really one for formal wear, suppose you show up in your favorite AC/DC t-shirt and a pair of jeans. Not only will you stick out like a sore thumb, but the bride and groom will probably be insulted. Now, there are some cases in which this behavior is acceptable; for example, if the ceremony is casual and it has been made clear that you can dress however you'd like. If this is not the case, try opting for a short sleved dress shirt, buttoned over a plain white t-shirt. Wear that with a set of khakis or nice dress pants and you've got wedding attire that is both casual and appropriate; you don't have to wear a suit and tie to look good! As far as ladies are concerned, there are plenty of simple, fun dresses that are both comfortable and appropriate for a wedding situation.
Funerals:
Another occasion during which a t-shirt would be highly inappropriate would be a funeral. Funerals are meant to honor the memory of the deceased and bring closure to the living, and wearing extremely causal attire can be seen as disrespectful. If you really want to keep things casual, you can do so by wearing a simple dress shirt and plain dress pants, or a nice blouse and skirt. You don't have to wear black, but showing up at a funeral home in a t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers is simply unacceptable and rude.
