Many homeowners decide to install a fence on their property for a variety of reasons. If you are considering building a fence, first have some idea of the type you need or want, and the purpose it will serve. The various types and styles of fences can be a bit overwhelming. Some are strictly decorative in nature; many others are for more practical purposes.
Before getting started, assuming that you know the fence design you want, you'll also need to know what kinds of tools will be required for the project. The following is a short list of a few basic fence building tools you might need:
-A shovel
-Claw or heavy-duty hammer
-Wire cutters
-Power or chain saw
-Post-hole digger/ auger
-Wheelbarrow
-Concrete mix
-Post pounder
-Level
-Fence pliers
As stated, this is only a partial list of some of the most basic tools. If you're going to build a chain link fence, or another type of wire fence, it would also be in your best interest to wear heavy-duty gloves to protect your hands from the sharp exposed wire.
While all the various types and styles of fencing could hardly be addressed in a short article, here's a look at some of the most common types, and what they might be used for:
WOODEN FENCES
Wood fence designs serve a variety of purposes. They can be used for everything from keeping livestock enclosed, to simply helping make your property more attractive. Wood fence designs are widely varied, as are sizes of these types of fences. Many homes have a simple picket fence if any type of wood fence is used. Picket fences are attractive, and create a visual definition of your property line. Keep in mind that most wooden fences of any style will need to be maintained periodically, which may include painting them from time to time.
PRIVACY FENCES
A privacy fence is designed to create a visual barrier. If you don't like the idea of nosy neighbors or passers-by peering in, you might want to consider learning how to build a privacy fence. Most privacy fences are also wooden, and use large slats or boards that are very close together, to block the view. These can either be left natural, or stained, or painted.
CHAIN LINK FENCES
Even a chain link fence can be attractive, as long as it's kept in good condition and not allowed to rust. These very common sturdy fences are excellent for keeping children and pets enclosed; or for basic security. They can also be combined with other fence types, or used in conjunction with hedges or other physical barriers.
OTHER METAL
For more heavy-duty security, an iron fence and gate may fill the bill. These offer better protection than a chain link- especially when they are topped with spiked posts- and are rather attractive in appearance. These may require a rust-resistant paint to protect against the elements.
VINYL
Vinyl fencing is gaining in popularity. It is strong, durable, weather-resistant, and attractive. Usually made to appear like wood fencing, vinyl is often used along horse and livestock pastures to keep animals enclosed; as well as for decorative use. It never needs to be painted. The only real downside is that in very cold weather it may become brittle and prone to breaking if subjected to much stress. It can also be more expensive upfront than traditional wooden fencing, but in the long run probably a better economic choice.
STONE OR BRICK
Technically a wall and not a fence, stone or brick can be used for a decorative barrier. However, much thought is needed before putting one up, as this would be a much more permanent structure than most fences.
Knowing how to build a fence, and the many various fence designs, can be valuable either now or in the future, depending on what your needs are.
