car reviews: Bugatti Veyron

The Veyron. An engineering miracle or the pinnacle of show off? Volkswagen's reincarnation of the great cars or just another million dollar car? Is this engineering really new or just a mixture or Bentley and VW's parts? Sure this $1.8mill supercar is relative value for money (cashing in originally at $8mill) but lots of other cars companies would do the same - or better - for a lot less. Take the SSC Ultimate Aero for example. 5km/h faster at 1.3mill US$ less. Does the Veyron really live up to original expectations? Has VW truely created a supercar?

Well in short, no. Unlike most, proper, supercars (eg. Gallardo Superleggera) the Buggati weighs in at just under a Range Rover. Unlike most supercars, the engine sound isn't phenomenal (eg. SLR Mclaren). But most importantly it handles worse than a family hatchback. No thought was given to the suspension, brakes with the engineering team focussing on the tuning of the 8.0L 1001BHP W16 (a modified version of the Continental GT's W12).

No kidding, the Veyron is fast but its the passion that isn't there. Just like the passion isn't there for the 599 Fiorano, or the Murcie. Bugatti need a raw performing, supercar WITH passion. Like the Alfa 8C, V8 Vantage even the (relatively) sluggish Carrera GT. These stripped out lightweight performers show the world what supercars should be - the Veyron showing the world what they're not. Come on Volkswagen, you can do better than this - think Golf GTi or Scirocco - these cars are injected with enough passion to power a jet. Speed isn't everything, guys. Just look at the Nurburgring. The Nissan GT-R stormed through it with its 3.8L TT V6. Imagine if they had hold of a W16.

Supercars have changed from being stripped out and re-engined sedans to hard boring cars that focus more on speed and design than passion and track work. In conclusion just a word to those Volkswagen people. Run the Veyron around the 'Ring. If it does better than the GT-R, I'll grant you with a win, but if it dosen't, well VW, try AGAIN.
