If you've decided to sell your domain name, you would have to find out its "real value". If you're one of those extraordinary lucky ones who happen to own a domain name like banks dot com, rock dot com, or anything generic dot com, then you can sell your domain name for a million or more. Finding the real value of your domain name is the wisest thing to do before you sell. Buying and selling domain names were the new "goldmine industry" about five years ago. Those were the days when generic names were still available on the web registrar.
Today however, it s a bit more difficult but it is not impossible. A short name that ends in a com can usually be sold fast. If you own mugs.com, someone could buy that for a million or less. Even a popular name like Monica Lewinsky dot com was sold in 1996 for a million because it was politically popular then or "hot". I am sure than most popular domain names like Paris Hilton dot com or Paris Hilton dot net have been sold or are up for grabs. If you own one of these popular domain names, get in touch with sedo or the website broker and tell tem what price you want for it. Sedo "parks" your domain name for you while they hunt for buyers which takes a long time but Website Broker is one of the fastest companies that can really sell because they do the hunt for you. You would have to pay them however a fee of 24 dollars which is reasonable if you want your domain name sold.
Compare it to something like real estate on the web. If your domain name happens to have an active website (called a fully developed site) with thusands of clicks, there is more possibility that you can sell your site for huge bucks. A site with 10,000 clicks per day plus a reasonably easy to recall domain name can get you something like 10,000-15,000 dollars, sometimes even more. That tells you that if you're serious in making money selling your domain name, sell it along with a great website so you can demand more dollars for a developed property on the web. Now, you get the idea?
Now the basics. A website that ends with a dot com is the most expensive in the domian industry business. Dot net is alright too but not have the same going rate as the dot coms. If you have a dot net site that is business dot net or something that fits any generic business that can mean big miney too. Even Paris Hilton or Jennifer Lopez dot net would probably make a big sell. There are also some "quirks" in this trade. For instance, the domain name Holywood, ca was sold for less than a million. CA is a Canadian domain ending but paired with the word Hollywood, the domain ending ca was a hit. Only the domain name was sold and last news was that it is being resold again at twice a million bucks. Beverly Hills dot ca is now a developed website for most tourists intending to go to Beverly Hills. Thus, if your domain name is "catchy" then it has potential too. A domain name with a well developed website is better to sell.
Whatever the general rules are however, the bottom line is does anyone want to buy the domainname you're selling. Admittedly, some are simply lucky or perchance, there was someone really interested in a domain name that was auctioned or advertised for sale. You never know unless you try, but before you do, make sure that you are not being shortchanged in the transaction.
The best is to read more about it and get a web broker.
