What is there to debate about on the subject of breast feeding? Yes this is a very natural thing to do for a mother and baby. However with that being said, privacy is very important for the mother as well as the "onlookers" whose viewpoints vary on this subject. That is the real issue here! How others perceive public breast feeding.
It is very unfortunate that we live in a society where people are so quick to judge others. It is also very unfortunate that people relate this very natural act to sexual remarks. However, this is reality in the society we live in and therefore women should take precaution and be prepared to use privacy and cover themselves while feeding the baby. Why should a mother doing a natural thing be made to feel uncomfortable? I believe in most cases people too generally feel uneasy and uncomfortable around the activity of a mother breastfeeding a child. However, breastfeeding a baby is the most natural phsycial and emotional connection between a mother and child. Babies have no patience and when they are hungry they want to eat and therefore the place to feed a child should never matter. It is the people around us that make the difference of whether to do it or not.
What annoys me more is that pumps have been made and are readily available to allow women to pump milk so that the use of a bottle could be used. The exposure of breastfeeding could therefore be eliminated in a public place. I understand that some women do not want to use this method but it is a solution for when they need to go out in public. I also realize that it takes time for this process and that confusing the baby may occur with the switching of nipples back and forth from the breast to the bottle. Some mothers also feel that the milk is not as fresh while others often pump and use it for night feeding only.
There are many places women can go to avoid public feeding if they are available. I am talking about a restroom or a fitting room in a mall or just ensuring the baby is fed before going into a public place. Sometimes this is not always the case however most people would understand the need for privacy. A small blanket should always be carried to avoid exposure and can be used if a place is not available. Once the baby is settled in his or her comfort zone people will stop looking. It is the people around us that make the difference since everyone is so opinionated - but I have to repeat myself again that breast feeding is one of the most natural experiences for any mother and child - it is society that dictates creating an issue about it.
