With the world of commerce quickly migrating online, it is tempting to look there for a good deal on guitars. While there might be plenty of deals out there in cyber space, buying online is not the best option.
Every guitar is different. Even two exact same models could play radically different, so it's best to play the exact guitar you buy before you put any money out for it. The best option is to find a privately owned music shop with knowlegeable employees and to go and have them assist you in finding a suitable guitar in your price range. Play as many as you can and make your desicion. I would avoid going to big box chain music stores because they have a tendancy to put all their stock on the floor and let any one who comes in play unsupervised. What ends up happening is, the guitars are already heavily used before they are sold and they rarely mark down the price.
Now if you cannot find a music store with a guitar you want, and you have to order online, that's ok. Most reputable online music stores will let you return the instrument for another if you are not satisfied. While this could be pricey in shipping and it could take a while, you're still going to end up with your dream guitar, and that's all that matters in the end. But please do not shop at a store that does not have any kind of return policy. Also, don't put too much focus on the brand. Esspecially in the low end, most big brands are about the same in quality. What I would encourage you to do is look at some lesser known imports which are a much better value than even some of the more expensive low-end guitars.
Armed with this knowledge, shop smart and find your perfect guitar.
