Whether it's to keep things in or out, a well constructed fence can last a lifetime, enhance property value, and add elegance to any home. Determining what type of fence design and how to build a fence can be a daunting task for any homeowner and may require a contractor but many homeowners are taking on the task themselves and learning how to build a fence with beautiful results.

Privacy fencing, usually six to eight foot in height, can afford seclusion against busy roadways and neighborhoods, or provide security for pets. Chain link and wrought iron designs add security with full visibility and wire and post fencing is an affordable solution for large areas and livestock.

Depending on the purpose of the fence, many materials can be used and prices can vary greatly. A typical wooden pole fence or chain link would cost a great deal more than a wire and post fence and fence designs, along with sqaure footage, will also determine overall cost. A contractor can typically charge over $100 an hour but this price also includes use of neccessary equipment, such as an auger to dig post holes and fence stretcher, which is needed to tighten fencing once attached.

Fence designs can be purchased in most home improvement stores and kits are also available. Wood fence designs are popular and vary in type of woods, patterns, and color. Pretreated lumber should always be used. If you are building a fence for the first time, choose simple designs that are easy to construct and care for. If it is an older home, ask for assistance finding designs andcolors that are correct for the period which the home was built. Stains and paints are available in a wide range of colors for wooden fences and most vinyl fencing options come in neutral color choices as well. Decorative metal fences can really add elegance and flair if you wish for more than the typical fence and designs are limitless. Consider "treasure hunting" online or in specialty fencing stores for unique designs to work with.

Once a fence design is chosen, it's time for the fence building to begin! If you are working with a contractor, be sure to receive several quotes and be sure to receive a written quote in advance as well as have any warranty information explained and also in writing before the job begins. If you choose to build your own, enlist the help of family and friends as fencing is more than a one person job. Work in good weather as too much rain and moisture will only cause fence posts to shift later. Again, keep
