Living as a single parent can be a very challenging experience. You both need to be the father as well as the father of the household. The hard part is when your children are still small and you don't have anyone to depend on to look after your kids. Another problem is that you also need to earn money to make it through each day with something to eat on the table for the family.
I personally have a great appreciation for single parents especially those who still became successful and those who were able to send their children to school. I know how hard it is to do things on their own despite the negative things that pose as threats in their lives.
One thing that single parents need to do to make sure that they can survive is to make a budget for the family. It would be a great challenge on how the parent can divide his or her small earnings just to make ends meet. Here are the tips that I could suggest for single parents:
KNOW YOUR MONTHLY INCOME
Before you make a budget plan, it is important that you first know your monthly income. If you have other sources of income aside from your regular job, may add them and estimate the total amount. From the total amount, you could then make a budget plan for your family. When making a budget plan, the amount of monthly income would greatly affect your decision on the type of lifestyle that you will be having for your household.
SET ASIDE THE MONEY FOR UTILITY BILLS AND RENTALS
It is very important that you first set aside the amount of money that will be used to pay utility bills and rentals. If possible, you need to pay them right away to prevent surcharges and interests. Never use the money that is allotted for these bills or your house will be filled out with unpaid bills and you would be living in agony without electricity, water and phone lines.
If the utility bills have not yet arrived, you may just estimate the amount with your usual monthly consumption by checking out your previous bills. This would guide you through the process of budgeting.
FOOD
After keeping the money for the utility bills and rentals, you then set a budget for your food. It is important to make use of some tips on how you could save money on food. If possible, you can buy food in the wet market since meat and fish there would be cheaper than in supermarkets.
You should also learn to cook so that your family would not be dependent on eating outside since this will be very expensive. If your kids are in school, you may pack them with snacks and meals so that there is no need to buy food from the canteen.
If you have a backyard, you may opt to plant some vegetables or fruit-bearing trees for your family consumption. Just try to save as much as possible.
USE THE INTERNET IN COMMUNICATING
Cellular phones will add a lot of expenses for you. If you also communicate with your friends, relatives or with your bank, try to do it through emails to save you from buying stamps. Stamps, nowadays, can really be expensive so try to make use of new technologies to save from buying stamps.
LEARN TO SAVE
In your monthly budget, always make sure that you keep some savings from it. Try to save every single penny as possible since you would just notice that you have already saved a lot in the long run. Your savings can help you a lot in times of emergencies. Saving money is a really important trait that will help ensure a good future for your family.
The tips stated in this article would really help a single parent to survive every day. This will help him or her to lessen the possibilities of encountering other problems that has something to do with money matters.
