A Personal computer has an operating system that serves as a platform for working with applications. Different softwares perform different tasks, For eg, An antivirus software is needed to protect the PC from virus, A firewall is needed if the PC is connected to the internet (though the firewall is not mandatory, it is needed to protect the PC from hackers), Few applications included with the operating system assist in protecting the PC, this includes an in-built firewall, an anti-spyware software etc.

Anti-Virus

An Antivirus software is very essential for a PC. It helps in protecting the PC from virus (A program that destroys/slows down the working of files/applications or even could crash the system). Some of the Antivirus Softwares are Nortan, AVG, McAfee antivirus etc. These are some well-known anti-virus softwares.

Firewall

A free Firewall is available for use called Zone Alarm (Zone Labs), this could be downloaded and used. It provides the basic firewall operation, if any additional features are required then it can be purchased.

Data back-up softwares

Data needs to be constantly backed-up, so as to avoid losing it. Certain back-up softwares are available which are capable of backing-up System files, mail present in outlook, Registries etc. The Genie Backup Manager is one of that kind which does the work successfully. The other Back-up softwares are NTI BackupNow, NovaStor NovaBackup etc.

The Windows Vista(operating system) provides a tool called Windows Defender, this acts an anti-spyware.

Softwares for entertainment

A PC is complete only if it fulfills the work of the user. Apart from the PC protecting softwares, there are certain apllications that needs to be installed for entertainment. The entertaining softwares includes the following,

1) Video Player

A Video player must be capable of playing videos of any formats. A player like Video LAN or Total Video player can fulfill this task as it capable of playing any video format. Now-a-days people download movies from the internet and the format of the movie could be either .dat, .mpeg4, .avi, .mkv, .wmv, .rm etc, so a video player must be capable enough to play any format. Apart from the third party softwares, there is an in-built video player included in the operating system but this is not fully functional as some formats cannot be played using this player (If a video file is not playing then some codecs must be downloaded for playing the file).
