Kayaking is a fun and exciting sport for those who love adventures. The thrill of going through rapids and the fulfillment of passing through them without being tossed upside down by the big waves would surely make the experience truly once in a lifetime. However, behind the fun and excitement lies a deeper consideration in choosing the right kayak for you.
Many of us think that kayaks only have one design, therefore, we don't have to choose what to use as long as it would take through the rapids without getting thrown into the waters. The truth is, kayaks are also designed to fit the requirements of the user. Therefore, if you want to choose the right kayak for you, you have to really choose for yourself which would provide you with utmost benefits. I'm pretty sure you don't want to spend thousands of dollars to buy a kayak that would not just fit into your requirements.
WIDTH ON THE WATERLINE
There are generally two types of kayaks when it comes to width - the narrow and the wide. This would have a lot to say on the kayak's performance and this should also be one of your top considerations aside from the price. Broad kayaks would surely touch a broader part of the waterline. This means that the kayak would be more stable since lesser means of stabilizing the kayak would be needed from the paddler. Therefore, this type of kayak is advisable for novice kayakers as well as those kayaks that will be used in rentals since the users would mostly be newbies in this sport. However, this type of kayak cannot be used in races since broad kayaks run slower.
The other type of kayak is the narrow one. This type of kayak provides the speed that you would need to win in races. However, the problem with this type is that it is less stable and it is harder to man it since the contact to the water is narrow. Therefore, this type of kayak is only advisable to those who are experienced in the sport.
WEIGHT OF THE PADDLER
Another consideration in buying a kayak is the weight of the paddler. The kayak would greatly depend its performance on the paddler so you should take that into consideration. Therefore, since you will be the buyer of a kayak, if you will be the one to use it, you need to consider your weight.
A heavy paddler would mean that a broader contact of the kayak to the waterline would be expected. This means that even if you buy a narrower kayak, your weight would help you to have a better grasp when it comes to stabilizing the boat. However, this would again make it to run
