Building a fence has always been thought of as a means of maintaining privacy and keeping unwanted people and animals out of your property. Thinking beyond this notion, fences can serve other more aesthetic purposes nowadays and any landscaper worth his knowledge will suggest these as part of beautifying your plot.
To make a traditional wooden fence usually requires not only your enthusiasm but that of the neighbour whose construction it will affect. So firstly you will have to agree or compromise on the final design and construction. Once agreed you will have to measure the angles of your plot, whether it is flat or hilly and allow the adjustments for the posts to appear uniformly straight. Once this has been done and the cross bearers are attached horizontally you can attach the palings or pickets to suit your own design. Picket design can have the top of the pickets all in line or you can create a wave effect by making dips between each fence post. Some other options are to attach brush ti tree bundles to the supports which gives a very earthy effect. Also upright railway sleepers give a very rustic look but would need strong foundation support with the posts and bearers. These thick beams can be attached horizontally. You wont need the horizontal supports as these are and they can be slotted into a routered groove cut into a thicker fence post. This looks like the old fashioned way of cutting your fence straight out of the woods.
Wrought iron fences are another option but these are usually see through however they look very artistic. If you are on a budget you can attach plain galvanised iron sheeting to your traditional fence posts and bearers. This actually looks rustic and would be good for a country setting. These days the sheets are colourbonded so you can have a choice of colours and be guaranteed it won't rust. Last, but probably the most beautiful fence can be made out of stone or rock. It becomes known as a wall and granite is usually best to construct it with. Here you have to sort your rocks into various shapes you know will fit like a jigsaw easily together. Then it is just a matter of using the same colour mortar to cement it all together. Choose any of these ideas to create a fence to suit your style.
