Do you want to low your disease risks, increase your energy and feel good? Eating healthy is one thing that you can do. However, in these days eating healthy is not cheap. How can you save money and eat healthy? Here, some aspects that can guide you to do that.
Frozen vs. Fresh
You can save money buying frozen vegetables. Frozen vegetables have the same quantities of nutrients than fresh vegetables. Keep in mind, there are countries that frozen vegetables and fruits are more expensive than fresh. Also, it is cheaper buy frozen 100% fruit juices than buy cans or bottles. Another option that you have is buy fresh fruits and make your own juices. Buy vegetables and fruits when they are in season. You can replace fresh vegetables by canned. Frozen and canned fish can be less expensive than fresh. If you have the high blood pressure problems, be careful with canned foods they can content much sodium.
Expensive Cuts vs. Cheap Cuts
Buying cheap meat cuts you can save some money. For healthier eating, eliminate fat parts before cooking and marinate the night before or use other tricks to turn soften the meat. In several countries you can buy bags of beef bones, they are very cheap and use to prepare soups. For eliminate fat, first prepare the soup and then put it on the refrigerator for about one hour, then eliminate the solid fat of the top. You use these liquid plenty of nutrients to prepare vegetables or beans. There are other kinds of meats that are cheap in some countries and are "exotic foods "in others: chicken feet, pork feet, chicken hearths, chicken livers, etc. Be careful with liver and chicken hearths, they have many nutrients, but a lot of fat too. Sometimes you can replace meats for beans.
Whole vs. Pieces
Buy whole things like chicken, turkey, cheese and other foods are cheaper than buy in pieces. Check supermarkets for offers can be special prices for food in a bulk.
Organic, non-fat, brand vs. Common food
Special foods are expensive than common. The generic food and supermarket own brands, are cheaper. Compare the nutritional content of foods, for example by comparing the calories in cheeses, if you notice that the difference is less than 25% of low-fat with respect to normal, you can buy the normal and eat a little less.
Water vs. Soda and other drinks
Water is the cheaper drink and is the most healthy. Drink water as a replacement for soda.
Planning your meals vs No planning
When you go to the grocery store you should carry a list of things what you need and adjust to that list. Eat before you go to the supermarket, thus eliminating the temptation to buy any snack that is not healthy. In addition, you should consider to buy in one grocery store, traveling looking for the most cheaper things can consume more money in fuel than the money that you can save buying in several places.
Eat at home vs. eat in restaurants
Eat a good breakfast at home before go out. Buy a lunch box to carry your food prepared at home to work. If you like coffee carry a thermos with it to work. Do not go out for coffee. You can prepare or buy healthy snacks and bring these to work.
You should be aware that conditions are not static. Today one alternative can be cheaper and tomorrow is not the same. These only are guides. Saving money and eating healthy depend of the country, place that you live and your pocket. Also, do not forget indirect saving of eating healthy: You save money in doctors and medicines.
