Causes of misery in today's society

by Daisy Rosario

Created on: September 30, 2008

Misery is also known as a feeling of tribulation, trial, suffering, grief, anguish, woe, torment, and desolation: the result (today) of an unfulfilled society; a society that needs more of everything everyday and is never in conformity nor complacent with its achievements; it's part of the inability to reach the cliched "status quo" or always notice the greener grass on the other side and never reach self-admiration for hard earned work nor desire to sacrifice certain wants for certain needs. Society, our society, our culture, wakes up everyday to an ongoing wheel and cycle of rushed frustration, settling for unfullilled dreams because the cost is just too much work, or not important enough. Our socio-economic status as a country grows steadily divided: therefore, the difference of who works hard at what and what will work for us creates a selfish interest, then to realize that it is either not enough or too much to work hard for... our miseries lie in the fact that we live in vices day after day. Vices do not bring fulfillment so how can we expect our society to grow in progress, to grow in virtues when we feed these vices day after day, continuously and consistently?

One thing in common, we share: wanting more because "what we have is not like the other", or "not enough to fulfill me attitude". If it's too much work.... then it's not worth it because we live in an instantly gratified society where patience, unfortunately has become our much less desired virtue to live by. We are in constant urgency to get things done now, today, yesterday with the attitude that "I" am "too busy" and do not "have time" to wait patiently long enough to make a good judgement.

Selfishness and egocentrism play a major role in contributing to the many miseries our society suffers today. That is all we are interested in... me, myself, and I. There is no genuine interest in "service" and I don't mean customer service. Servitude that accompanies empathy, compassion, patience (again). When a person goes out of their way to service another, there is a sense of fulfillment... an accomplishment.... an inner smile that brings about satisfaction, and giving without expecting. But no, society has zero time for this! Its a waste of time to do something for another with genuine interest. The worst part is, those that receive simply do not project a sense of appreciation. So the cycle begins: "If I'm not appreciated, then why waste my time?"
