"Hey Selena. Thanks for hosting this!"
"Hey. No problem. Glad you guys could come."
"You remember Clive."
Selena remembered Clive, the guy Susan had tried to introduce to her a few weeks ago. Selena did not remember telling Susan to invite him, but here he was.
Shane was also here. She had not told him explicitly that she was even having a party. Oh great, he brought more uninvited guests. Selena did not mind having more people at her gatherings, but Shane's boring bank friends were not the life of the party.
"Selena, you remember Chuck and Lisa. They are huge fans of Heroes."
"How are you? Great to see you again."
"Thanks so much for having this. Shane said you wouldn't mind if we joined the festivities."
"Not at all. Please come in and make yourself comfortable."
"Here's a bottle of wine. We didn't want to come empty handed."
"How thoughtful. You can put it on the table with the other drinks. There should be a corkscrew out there if you want to open it."
Selena collected herself. She was looking forward to a small get together to relax with a few of the girls. It did not bother her to have their boyfriends there, but the added tension of having guys around was not what she wanted to deal with tonight. Now she was going to have to smile and play a part instead of letting her hair down.
"Selena, so you need some help with those?"
"Thanks Shane. Here. Could you take this dip out for me? This is the pita bread that goes with it."
"Which table do they go on?"
"There should be one with drinks and another with the food."
"This smells great. What is it?"
"Three cheese artichoke dip... No. Here. This needs to go on the
"So how has your week been." "Going pretty well. Hey, so are you reading anything lately?"
"Oh yeah. I just finished Anne of Green Gables.' I love it."
Are you kidding? Oh my gosh. Teenage girls read that.
"Really? What do you like about it?"
"It's just.. so real. Real emotions. Real country life. Maybe I'll take a break from work and go work on a dairy farm."
He was serious. He wasn't just trying to connect with her as a woman. This was creepy.
"How has work been, Selena?"
"Hey Chuck. Been pretty good. Thanks for asking. How is your hedge fund?"
"Holding steady. A good hedge fund should continue making money even if they market is down."
Thanks for the info.
"How long have you and Lisa been in New York?"
"About ten years."
Please don't let that be me. "We met here. It's a great place for our careers."
"So has Shane been behaving himself at the bank?"
"Oh yeah. He does a great job
