"17ft Python found in an allotment in Lancashire"! That is one of the headlines from today's news revealing that a gardener in Lancashire, UK came across the large snake and his first thought was to throw it in the river. He soon realized this was no a good idea and promptly called the police. They then contacted the RSPCA to seek advice on the best way to catch it. One officer said "the only advice we got was not to approach it from the front".
Apparently the Python had breathing problems and it is thought it was simply abandoned by its owner. The advice from the RSPCA is that if you ever come across a loose snake, don't approach it, but give them a call and they will deal with it. So if you thought Pythons were native to only certain countries, this story reminds us you will find them anywhere now that they have become creatures people choose as pets.
The Python is an absolute marvel, a creature that strikes fear into humans even though there have been very few cases of Python attacks on humans. Some humans actually keep these snakes as pets and personally feed them without harm. One Florida man did make the mistake of getting too close while feeding his pet Python and almost suffered the fate usually reserved for jungle creatures who venture into the snake's path. His pet snake wrapped itself around him and had his forehead in its mouth before he was rescued by two of his friends.

Generally speaking, the Python is not a real danger to humans. It is not a poisonous reptile but does all the damage by grasping its victim tightly before opening its unhinged jaws to draw it in. It is staggering to watch
