Poetry: The masks we wear

by J Franklin

Women

what color are your eyes today
the windows to your soul
more brown, or green, or blue, or gray
what secrets to unfold

what you hide behind those panes
most can't see at all
you're separated, set apart
behind some unseen wall

what a sight to see your graceful dance
as you put on your happy show
and avoid all those who can look at you
and then, at once, who'd know

that everything's not always right
in your inside quiet world
there's things that keep you up at night
and part of you's still a girl

there's method to your fickle madness
as you cast your way about
and there's reasons for your silent sadness
all souls are filled with doubt

you hide it well so no one asks
and your brilliance still shines through
so I warm myself, and sit and bask
in the beautiful ballet that's you
