Tips on saving paper and trees

by Erica Fields

I'm pretty hyped up about saving our planet. Global Warming, political strife, endangered species. There's a million things we can do to make the world a better place but for today lets focus on paper. Welcome to my fun and fanciful world of conservation.

.Use both sides of the paper- duh. Whether you're making a handwritten note or printing something, use both sides on none published works.

.Pick a smaller piece of paper for your smaller messages. You don't need a poster to remind your husband dinner is at six.

.Remember the Charmin bears when your on the toilet. Do you really need half the roll? Most of the toilet paper we choose for our own homes is thick enough to keep your paws and butt clean without making a TP mitten.

.When your ready to throw out your old magazines and catalogs choose to set them aside for the recycling bin.

.Many rooms like the office never have actual garbage in the pail, if it's all paper anyway why not recycle it?

.There are tons of post consumer papers on the market. Spend the extra buck.

.Speaking of bucks. Star-buck's uses post consumer cups and such. Support Star-buck's and other yummy businesses like them. Also, send me Frappuccinos.

.Use boss mans memos as scrap paper. He'll love that. Better yet, if you're still getting paper memos ask your boss to switch to email.

.Use junk mail to make paper hats!

.Use junk mail to make paper airplanes!

.Printer? What printer? Since I purchased my laptop in August I haven't used a printer and I don't miss it either. Reconsider what you print.

.After waiting tables for three years I am convinced that napkins are the root of all evil. No one needs 10 napkins to eat and if you do you shouldn't eat out in public anyways. Get about two extras per person and unfold each one before using it. You'll get more square footage this way.

.Power companies, banks, credit cards. All of these companies are offering paperless statements now. Check with them for availability in your area.

.If you can't save a tree, plant a tree.

.Email local politicians and push for more recycling awareness/opportunities/facilities in your area.

.Use a cloth handkerchief instead of tissue paper. Clean socks and your hubby's shirts also work.

.Hate credit card offers crammed in your mail box? There's a 1-800 on the offer to opt-out of all offers for a few years or forever . Just takes a few minutes per person.

.Buy foods with minimal packaging. Support Earth friendly products.

.I know you hate doing dishes but suck it up! Paper plates are evil and seldom ever necessary.

.Sort your mail near the recycling bin. Lest you be tempted to just dump it into the trash.

.Put a paper shredder near that recycling bin. Lest you be tempted not to put financials in there (there's no theme forming here.)

.Teach the children.

.You know the junk on the floorboards of your car -DON'T LIE- I know its there. Next time you're at a grocery store etc. where they have a recycling center, pull on up and empty out there. Lest you be tempted to do it at a dumpster or car wash trash can.

.Do as I say not as I do.

.Line your pets cage with papers.

.Don't use paper towels to clean what sponges or towels could clean. If you must, splurge on the better paper towels that hold up longer.

.Did you know wiping your fruit and veggies with paper towels actually puts more germs on the fruit than you just cleaned off. Yeah, they're pointless.

.Make conservation part of your party planning experience. A little forethought makes a world of difference. Especially, when 100 people are consuming goods at once.

.E-file your taxes.

.I don't have time to go to the recycling center! Yes you do. Find one at a local grocery store and load up your car before you go to get your eats.

.You know your lifestyle do what you know works not what I tell you. Recycle. Reduce. Reuse. Every little thing makes a difference. Watch the movie An Inconvenient Truth. There's more important things than paper we need to worry about.

Good Luck and don't mess this up. I live here too.
