The IPCC is a scientific intergovernmental body set up by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The main activity of the IPCC is to provide in regular intervals Assessment Reports of the state of knowledge on climate change. The latest one is "Climate Change 2007", the Fourth IPCC Assessment Report.

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was created in 1988 and publishes its assessment report about every five years. Latest report published in 2007, this is the fourth assessment report since creation of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate change. Key findings of the latest report are
- Very likely causes of global warming are from human activities.
- As the global warming processes have started since long ago, it will continue for
years to come, no matter how much control on pollution is established.
- Predicted that by 2100 atmospheric temperature will increase by 2 to 11 degree F.
This a wider range comparing predicted in 2001 assessment report, which was 3.1 to
7.1 degree F.
- Predicted that by 2100 sea water level will rise by 7 to 23 inches. An additional
rise of 3.9 to 7.8 inches is a probability due to the starting of abnormal melting of
polar ice caps.
- Likely reasons of frequent and more intense hurricanes are global warming.
Human influences have been identified as major reason of climate change in all the reports by IPCC since its creation.
All the IPCC assessment reports have drawn criticism from environmentalists and other interested parties. Commenting on the fourth report, Senator James Inhofe said," This is a political document, not a scientific report, and it is a shining example of the corruption of science for political gain. The media has failed to report that the IPCC Summary for Policymakers was not approved by scientists but by UN political delegates and bureaucrats."
The first assessment report had change as environmental scientists objected to it. Dr. Fredrick Seitz described report as most disturbing corruption of scientific process.
Second report published in 1996 was also contradicted. The report was described by Professor Chris de Frietas as deceptively altered documents to convey misleading interpretation to public that there is a discernible human influence on climate, which will lead to catastrophic warming of climate.
There are even contradictions on issues like
- Human influenced carbon dioxide has nothing to do with global warming. It is more of
a natural process.
- Earth's temperature rise since last century is a temperature fluctuation only and
nothing to do with global warming.
- Melting of glaciers are not from global warming, it is a natural process and melting
has been taking place since centuries back.
The criticism and contradictions are mostly between scientists and politician or bureaucrats. In fourth report Appendix A', the clause "Changes (other than grammatical or minor editorial changes) made after acceptance by the Working Group or the Panel shall be those necessary to ensure consistency with the Summary for Policymakers or the Overview Chapter." commented by American Liberty Publishers' as In other words, the "science" will be adjusted to agree with whatever the politicians and bureaucrats want it to say. It's happened before'.
History will prove what is right and what is wrong. Generation to come will assess if had taken right decision in time to protect the Earth.
