Believe it or not there was a time before disposable diapers and mothers survived just fine. So did the babies for that matter! As the modern day society has evolved it has become one where convenience reigns and reusable is a thing of the past. Having said that though the and much to the pleasure of environmentalists, cloth diapers are slowly making a come back.
Many parents are now choosing to use cloth diapers in the safety of their home yet are reluctant to lose the disposable diapers for outings or holidays. Naturally most would assume that it is much easier to simply throw away the plastic than hold on to a dirty smelly cloth, but with a little bit of prior preparation it is possible to survive the holidays out of town with cloth diapers.
The level of planning is of course dependent on how long you will be going away for and where you will be going. Rest assured though regardless of your situation it is still possible to use cloth, just as you would at home. Here are some helpful hints to get you through.
Diaper Liners ~ These are relatively inexpensive and as the name suggests line the inside of the diaper. This means that solids can easily be disposed of and flushed down the toilet rather than carried around. It is also possible to make your own with either material scraps or chux like dish clothes. Of course they can also be washed with your nappies if you prefer not to throw out the wet ones.
Bucket with a secure lid ~ Great for road trips this can go be placed in the back of the care filled with sanitizing solution. Diapers can easily be placed in the bucket as they get changed. When you arrive at your destination it is just a matter of finding a washing machine and rinsing then drying the diapers.
Large bag ~ As cloth diapers can be bulky you will need a fairly large bag to store them in while you are holidaying. The total amount of diapers required to take away will depend on your baby's age, the time you are away and the availability of a washing machine. Generally speaking you will need between one to two dozen. Of course this bag can be left at your 'holiday home' and a regular diaper bag used when you are out and about.
Rubber covers ~ When placed over the diaper they prevent moisture leaking onto baby's clothes and save the need to change the entire outfit at every nappy change.
Plastic bags ~ To store used diapers in when you are away from your bucket.
While using cloth diapers may take a little extra effort while you are away from home, it is much kinder to the environment and often your hip pocket.
