The Count Who Stayed Dead
A Halloween Story for Children
The dance was scheduled for the Halloween night. Everyone in school was going to be there; everyone but me. I wasn't going to be there because I hated dances. I was a tomboy, through and through. My name is Lillian. I am twelve years old and I live in Alma City, Michigan. I go to Porter Junior High School.
I suppose I could have went to the Halloween party with the other kids. I mean, it IS my school. I would feel weird going though. I am NOT Miss Popularity. First of all, my mom makes me dress all weird, and wear these weird braids in my hair. The kids make fun of me because of my red hair. They call me names like "red" and "fire". I have freckles on my face and they call me names like "freckle face" and such names like that which is SO humiliating to me. They tug on my braids that my mom makes me wear to school and they even cut one of them off once in second grade and I went running home crying.
I have one good friend at school and that is Lance. He's my best friend in the world. He sticks up for me and is my knight in shining armor. Maybe I will go to the party after all just to see what happens. I heard it will be interesting. I heard that they are having a haunted house and that it will be scary. That should be fun!
LATER AT THE PARTY.

Lance laughed and asked me if I wanted to go. I frowned. I shook my head no. I didn't think so. "Are you scared?" asked Joe, a friend of ours. "No" I answered. I didn't want to admit I was really afraid. "Then lets go!" said Lisa, another friend. "Yeah, lets go before the crowd gets too heavy!" said Jim. Jim didn't go to our school, but he was Greg's friend and Greg asked him to come to the party. So I begrudgingly went along. I wasn't happy about it, but I couldn't back out or I would have looked like a coward.
I knew that the haunted house was put on by our peers, but it was dark and eerie. It looked so real. There was smoke and dim lights everywhere. There were phony spiderwebs sticking to your hair, and little fingers grabbing at you as you walked by. They had scary music playing and it was really weird! They had a headless guy trying to grab you, and all in all, I had to admit it was pretty cool, till
