Unemployment is at an all time high therefore the job market is going to be very competitive to say the least. With that in mind you need to know that everything you do in relation to your job search counts. Once you land an interview you must begin to prepare right away. First make sure you have the correct address as well as the directions to your destination. You never want to be late. This sends a message to the employer that you don't value their time.
It's a good idea to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. Make sure you review the company website so that you can come away with 5 or 6 important facts about the organization. Employers can be more selective therefore it is imperative that you standout from the competition. Your resume should be professionally prepared and carefully placed inside of a resume folder which creates an excellent professional appearance. Tailor your resume to the position you are applying for.
Here are some ways to really stand out:
Research a Problem
See if you can research a problem the organization is facing and try to get as much detail as possible and be prepared to discuss it and have a probable solution. This shows that you are taking the initiative and are serious about your job search. This is a great way to show that you have excellent leadership skills and you are in fact a person of value. Organizations are always looking for those rare individuals that go above and beyond the call of duty and are problem solvers.
Team Player
You must also demonstrate the fact that you are a team player. Employers are always looking for individuals who are concerned about their fellow employees and who can communicate and work with individuals all levels of an organization.
Ability and Skill Set
Let the interviewer know that you are a person that is capable of learning two or three positions or at the very least you will gain a general knowledge of the other positions. Be prepared to present some ideas on how to increase sales and profits even when times are tough during a slow economy.
Have a dynamic attitude
Demonstrate how you can motivate employees and keep morale high during tough economic times. No longer can you just show up and give a good interview. It is now imperative that you go all out to demonstrate what you are bringing to the table.
Know the Mission Statement
Understand the mission statement and what the organization is trying to accomplish. This one step shows that you took interest in the company and you are trying to see how you can help them meet their objectives. Draw a parallel between your own job skills and what the organization is trying to accomplish as it relates to their mission statement.
What is your absolute value? List all of your talents and abilities and see how you can use them for the job you are applying for. Are you able to cut costs or save the company time and money? All of these things are very crucial when times are tough in the job market.
