Drink recipes: Halloween cocktails

Children are not the only ones among us who are allowed to have fun on Halloween. Hosting a cocktail party on Halloween can make a delightful evening of fun spent enjoying the company of our friends. Your party can be quite successful with a little advanced planning.

Begin compiling your guest list three to four weeks in advance of the party. Invitations need to be sent out in time to allow the guests two weeks notice of the party. Most adults love a costume party, however, be sure to notate on your invitations that it is a costume party. Some guests may be reluctant to dress up for fear of being the only one in attendance who did so if you fail to notate it on the invitation.

After the guest list has been made and the invitations prepared, it is time to plan your cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and decorations.

Bear in mind that, though this is specified as a cocktail party, you may have more than one guest in attendance who, for a personal or medical reason, cannot consume alcohol. There may be a friend you could not bear to leave off the guest list or an invited guest may bring a date or spouse who does not drink. Be a great host and provide a non-alcoholic beverage keeping in the theme of the party as well as the cocktails.

A witch's cauldron large enough to serve as a punch bowl works well for punch type drinks. Fill it with a red fruit punch kept chilled by a "severed" hand of ice. To make the hand, two to three days prior to the party fill a clean, powder free rubber glove with water and tie it off. Place the glove in the freezer, taking care not to rest it on the wire shelving or food items which can distort the shape. Laying the glove on a boxed food item works well. Just prior to the arrival of guests, cut the rubber glove away from the ice with a pair of kitchen shears or scissors and place it in the cauldron.

Halloween is a time of witches, monsters, vampires, skeletons, black cats, spiders, zombies, and the like. Serving appropriate theme based cocktails is as easy as having the right recipes. Most cocktail parties are of a two hour duration. Compile your drink list and be sure to stock an ample supply of ingredients for the number of guests you have invited. The following eight recipes make great Halloween cocktails. Make recipe cards you can discreetly keep behind the bar. Beware not to drink in excess or you may find yourself waking to a witch of a hangover.
