How to save money and eat healthy

by Angela Diggs

Created on: September 27, 2008

If you truly want to save your hard earned money, eat healthier. It's that simple! When you go to the grocery store, it is less expensive to purchase a bag of bananas than a pack of cookies. You know I'm right. I've seen it first hand. It is more economic to fill your cart with fruits and vegetables than prepackaged foods like "Hungry man dinners", Smart choice", "Uncle Ben bowls", "and Mott's apple sauce". It's amazing that the first thing most of us see is the produce section when we walk into the supermarket, yet we pass it by and go for other foods.

What people are paying more for are the names of these companies. They charge more and yet you never get enough food. I know for a fact that you can save yourself .40 if you purchase "Krasdale" apple sauce instead of "Mott's". Sometimes you save money by buying another name brand that is less popular. In tough times like these we must finds ways to save money and eat healthy. This is how you can.

GO TO A FOOD PANTRY

Find the closest food pantry in your area and pick up vegetables, fruits and fish. Food pantries have fresh food that is healthy and free. They give out tuna fish cans, water, vegetables, and fresh fruits. It's free and good for you!

BUY ORANGES INSTEAD OF ORANGE JUICE

Studies have shown that many orange juices are loaded down with artificial sugar. For example, juices like "Sunny Delight" are not good for you. It's better just to go to the source. You can get all your required vitamin C from one orange. It's healthier and cheaper. Instead of paying $2.50 for a carton of juice, spend it on a bag of fresh oranges.

BUY VEGATABLES IN BULK

Vegetables are cheaper when you buy them as they are. Buy bags of lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, scallions, celery, and garlic. It is better to buy them this way and weigh them. You will see that you can save money and be healthy. Pre packaged salad cost more is often wasted. Once it is opened, forget it. It is best to put it in a glad plastic bow. Seal it. Make your own salad from scratch.

BUY A WATER FILTER

Use the water you have from your sink and filter it out with a Brita Filter. You will pay for this filter once and it will keep giving you fresh water over and over. That is better than buying cases of bottled water over and over again. Studies show "bottled" water to be as safe as "tap" water. Bottled water can get expensive. Why not get it for free right out of your sink? In fact, professionals confirm that more lead was found in bottled water than in tap in
