Attic fans are an cost effective way of cooling the attic, and thereby the whole house, with only minimum routine maintenance. They conveniently fit between rafters and can save you hundreds of dollars a year . Attic fans can be lifesavers during the summer months and help reduce premature deterioration of your roofs shingles. And are very simple to install in a couple of hours with a nominal level of skill.

Proper venting cools your roof, extending the material life and reduces the load on your air conditioning system. Passive roof vents installed in the gables of a house, are sadly insufficient at dissipating the heat build up in a house. The attic acts like a giant radiator, passing excess heat back into house and driving temperatures and cooling costs literally through the roof. If a damp smell is coming from the attic, there are probably some other hidden problems there, such as a roof leak or excessive moisture due to improper venting. A good sign of moisture problem is rusty roof nails sticking through the roof deck. Reduce your cooling costs and protect the integrity of your roof by using a properly installed attic fan to vent your attic, even during power outages.

Attic ventilation is not often at the top of a homeowner's to do list, but it should be. The amount of ventilation an attic needs is determined by many factors, but in general the more the ventilation your attic has, the better off you will be. During the hot summer months, attic temperatures can reach up to 200 degrees, and even though passive cooling systems, such as gable vents, can help disperse the heat, more efficient ventilation can be gained through the use of attic fans. A properly installed attic fans can increase the air flow by pulling in air outside of your home and pushing it out through attic vents. Since most attic fans are located high up on a roof, this design allows for excellent cross ventilation of the entire attic space. Better cooling performance means the potential for more energy savings for your home or business.

There is a new group of products that use solar energy to move out hot attic air without adding to the cost of your electric bill . Solar attic fans offer an environmentally friendly and affordable solution to summer time cooling problems resulting from attic heat penetrating your home's insulation. Solar powered fans cost a little more than electric fans, but they do not require electrical wiring and they operate without costs.
