Many people today are living paycheck to paycheck or have limitations to their budget. But that does not mean that you have to sacrifice everything, you just have to make smarter decisions when spending your money. Purchasing just the basics can be a financial strain especially on a limited budget, but there are ways to get around the monetary issues. Before you spend any of your income you should take a look at your finances, and determine the exact amount of income (revenue) versus your expenditures.
Many communities have sites on the web where items can be found for free. Free is great for anyone who is on a budget and can not spend as freely as those with a higher income or less expenses. These sites contain items that are new or gently used, and the owner no longer wants or needs them. Or you will find items being sold at a relatively low price in comparison to their retail value. For example, I have purchased a router for my computer for $5 which would have cost $80 in the store and it works and looks just as good as a new one. All you have to do is communicate with the seller, agree on the price, and arrange a time for pick-up.
I have found a number of items on auction sites that are brand new and are being sold for a significantly lower price than in a retail store. It may take time to find the item or items you are looking for but the search will be worth all the money you will save. Also, may not need the item you are looking for right away. Sometimes if you are willing to wait a day or even a week, what you are looking for may eventually be listed at the price you are willing to spend and can afford. When bidding keep your budget in mind and do not spend over the amount you had decided on.
I have found many new and gently used items at garage sales and thrift stores that only needed a little elbow grease to clean them. Also, I have found antiques and on my budget I would have never afforded them if I had purchased them from a dealer. Bigger items such as furniture sets can be found here, usually all you have to do is buy the item and arrange a way to bring it home.
Discount stores contain overstock or discontinued items from major retailers. Many times these stores are not set up as well as chain stores but if you take the time to search, you can walk out with great deals. The money set aside in your budget will go much further and instead of being able to only buy one or two items you may be able to buy 3 times the amount of items and pay less than retail.
Chain stores are the option of last resort. If I can not find what I am looking for anywhere else, I will go to a traditional retailer. However, there is a catch to this exception. I will only purchase items on sale or in the clearance section, I refuse to pay full price. If the item you are looking for is full price, wait to make the purchase or shop around at other store. Chances are it will go on sale, or there is another store that carries the same item for a lower price.
Just because you are living on a budget doesn't mean you have to struggle to make ends meet. You simply need to be a wise consumer, and make all your decisions carefully. When you are buying items ask yourself is this something I really need and can I find it cheaper somewhere else? Usually with a little legwork you can get the lowest price for any item, and you will never (and should never) pay full retail price again.
